If you want a beautiful garden without the work-and WHO doesn't?-plant daylilies. There are hundreds of different colors and small ones, large ones. short ones and tall ones.
This one is called a spider and is huge.

This one has crinkly petals and is a beautiful pink, even though the color doesn't show well in this photo.
They only need dividing every four years or so. They don't even need to be deadheaded, the blooms fall off on their own. They hardly ever need fertilize and are drought tolerant. I will say that for the most blooms, give them lots of water-put down soaker hoses and water good once a week. There are daylilies that bloom early, mid season and late-and even repeat bloomers-pick some of each and you will have beautiful blooms all summer.

I love lilies, but I've never tried growing them here in the desert. Just may have to give it a whirl!
