Every year Mississipp has the Dixie National Rodeo . People travel in old time wagon trains from vsrious parts of Ms. to the state fair grounds to this event. This is not something I would do-as it is usually pretty chilly in February. Also I am not a roughing it kind of girl. It is always fun to see the wagon trains traveling thru though.I spotted this group stopped for lunch.
Can you imagine traveling down todays busy highways in these? The horses must be trained really well. It takes days or maybe weeks for some to get to their destination. They stop and camp every night. I imagine they are only traveling just a few hours a day. There was a terrible tragedy several years ago. While camping for the night, a young couple died of carbon monoxide poisoning thru a faulty heat source in their wagon. They left several small children. So sad.
They take their bathrooms with them! My hats are of to these people for remembering the old ways!

I have heard about the Dixie National Rodeo, but knew nothing about this horse and wagon stuff. We actually have an Amish community nearby, so it is not unusual to see horses and buggies out on the highway, and the wal-mart near their commuity has designated parking for their horses and buggies. You will see lots of them in town on Saturdays doing their shopping.

Oh my goodness what a gorgeous share today. I too, take my hats off to these folks. I cannot imagine riding in one of these wagons over rough tourain. At least today they have pretty decent roads to ride on. I am like you though, I wouldn't like the cold, and I don't much care for the outdoor toities. Love seeing the assortment of wagons. The colors and shapes are totally amazing.

What cool pictures, but I'm with you. It's too cold to be sleeping in the back of the wagon (or a tent).
My brother used to love to trail ride, the one he did was a fund raiser or something...

I looked real close and their wagons are non traditional with stuffed seats and plastic coverings. Also the real wagon trains did not carry bathrooms etc with them. Carbon monoxide is something folks don't think about but it kills several yearly. I am sure they are having fun and more power to them but they are just pretending and really are not experiencing a true wagon train. Peace
Wow...this would be amazing to see! Yes, February is "roughing it" weather no matter the transportation!

Don't think I'd want to do this, but I guess it's fun for those who like it.
That really was sad.
